India was established and the country was declared as Sovereign, Secular,
Socialistic and Democratic Republic nation. This day reflects all the struggles
of the people who fought for Indian independence.

Dominion of the British Empire, which meant, we were an Autonomous British
Colony, who could govern ourselves independently but under a Constitutional
Monarchy. Dr. Ambedkar with an assembly of 308 members worked for close to
three years to draft our Constitution. The final copy was signed on 24th January,
1950. A couple of days later on January 26 our Constitution came into effect,
completely dethroning the British monarchy of India. It was on this day we
truly became an independent republic with a democratic government. To put it in
layman terms, this was the day we started to govern ourselves by our own rules.

on 26th January 1950, three years after independence. It is a national holiday,
and the nation celebrates to cherish the auspicious moment of its evolution
into the world’s largest democracy.
A Glimpse of History
Even though India acquired independence on August 15, 1947, it was in
short of an elaborate constitution and also didn’t have authorities and
political powers to run the state affairs. Until then, we used to amend and
modify the 1935 Government of India Act for governing and execution purpose.
Those modifications only suited the interests of the colonial rule, and
demanded the need for a well-established permanent constitution.
Therefore, on August 28, 1947, India formed a constitutional drafting
committee under the leadership of Dr. B. R Ambedkar. The constitutional commity
presented the draft before the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. The
entire process took 166 days, involving a tiresome process in which the
committee organized sessions which were open to the public.
It was indeed a challenging act for the constitutional committee as the
committee has to blend rightly and balance the interest of various religions,
cultures, languages, social classes, castes, creed, even the minute details
that can hamper the social fabric of the society.
Finally, on 24th January 1950, two handwritten copies of the document,
one Hindi and the other in English were unanimously passed and signed by the
three hundred and eight members of the committee. Incidentally, on January 26,
1950, the Indian constitution officially presented to the nation.
Also, the Indian parliament held its first session on the same day, and
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first president of the Republic of
India. This event marked the birth of sovereign India symbolizing the end of
British trails and India transformed to a Republic State.
Republic Day Celebrations
Every year January 26, Indians celebrate Republic Day with lot of
enthusiasm. Irrespective of their region, religion, caste, language or color,
all Indians unite in their diversity in patriotic spirit to celebrate the
national Republic Day worldwide. The most prominent of the celebrations take
place in the capital city of India, in New Delhi with Republic Day Parade
showcasing the military might and cultural diversity.
The ministry of defense organize the Delhi Republic Day parade with the
active participation of three military units, semi-military units, NCC, various
paramilitary units and floats on the thoroughfare of Rajpath starting from
Rasina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan, passes through India Gate, and ends at
Red Fort. The parade also consists of some performance by each state in their
ethnic style.
The ceremony starts with the commemoration of the martyrs who shed their
blood for the country as the Prime Minister offers a wreath at Amar Jawan
Jyothi. Later the Prime Minister receives the President of India and the chief
guest of the occasion.
National Flag Hoisting:
The President then hoists the national flag followed by 21 gun salutes
and the military band play the national anthem. Another highlight of the
occasion is the bravery award ceremony such as Veer Chakra, Kirti Chakra, etc.
Chief Guest:
During the annual celebration, we shall invite some dignified state
heads from the world as a chief guest to watch the grand gala celebration,
which showcases the cultural richness and military might of India. Selection of
chief guest send a strong political message to the world, and it always
reflects, political and strategic relationship with that country.
Conclusion:
Indians celebrate Republic Day with lots of enthusiasm and let us not
forget the long journey to freedom, the struggles of our forefathers to make
the country a sovereign state. It is a day for all Indians to celebrate the
essence of liberty and take India forward to accomplish the dream of our
freedom fighters.
Introduction
India celebrates its Republic Day on 26th of January
every year. People pay respect by hoisting the National Flag and singing the
National Anthem.
Why do we celebrate Republic Day?
The Republic Day is celebrated on 26th January because it was exactly
on 26th January, 1950
that India became a Sovereign Democratic Republic and had a newly
framed constitution for itself. It is this constitution that formed
the base and a guiding document for independent India.
Importance of Republic Day
We all know that India got independence on 15th August 1947;
still leaders were not elected since we didn’t have a constitution on our own.
Even after independence, India had no other option than to remain under the
constitutional monarchy of King George VI. India was ruled by the British for
many years and even the hard earned independence did not give the much needed
democracy.
The Drafting Committee which was headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was given
the responsibility of framing the constitution. Dr.B.R.Ambedkar
submitted the newly drafted constitution to the Indian Assembly on 4th Nov 1947but it took almost
two and half years for the constitution to be fully amended. Finally it was on
26th Jan 1950, the
Constitution was fully enforced, and India was declared a Democratic Republic.
Many of us do not know the significance behind 26th January and
why this date was chosen as the Republic Day. It was on 26th January, the
demand for independence was made for the first time during the Lahore Session
of the Indian National Congress. Following the session, 26th January 1930
was declared as ‘Purna Swaraj Day’ which meant Independence Day.
Hence 26th January was
chosen as the date for Republic Day in order to honor the wish of freedom
fighters. The constitution model was also named ‘Purna Swaraj’.
Republic Day Celebrations
The Republic Day is declared a public holiday and people from all walks
of life involve in various celebrations across the country. All the
celebrations start with hoisting of National Flag and ends with reciting
National Anthem. Schools and colleges have their own way of celebrating
Republic Day by conducting cultural programmes, competitions for students and
distribution of sweets. Many take part in volunteering activities such as blood
donation camps etc., but the most important celebration
which almost everyone in the country look forward to is the Republic Day Parade
that is held in Delhi, the Capital city of India.
People from all parts of India reach Delhi to witness this grand Parade
that extends from Rajpath to Red Fort. The parade is a visual treat to the spectators
as well as a proud moment to the citizens of India. The Parade highlights the rich cultural heritage of India and its
unity in diversity. The march past of the three main wings of
defense – army, navy and air force makes everyone sit dumbstruck. The Honorable
President of India, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed
Forces, takes the salute from the defense forces. Every year the Indian
Government invites a guest, normally Prime Minister, President or Head of
friendly nations for the Republic Day Celebration.
The celebrations begin early in the morning amidst thousands of
civilians, politicians, and celebrities gathering at Rajpath. The power and
valor of the defense forces are showcased in various forms. The defense forces
display their latest weapons, machinery, tanks, missiles, and other equipments
of war. This is to prove the capability of the Indian Defense Forces to the
world nations. There will be a new addition every year and it proves that the
country is progressing. The tunes played by military bands, trumpets, and drums
makes us even more patriotic. Police force and N.C.C cadets from across the
country also participate in the Republic Day Parade. Motorcycle ride by the
armed forces is not to be missed.
The Republic Day Parade of India certainly shows the beauty of its different states. Every
state is depicted in tableaux form where the life of its people, their culture,
customs and their growth past independence over these years are highlighted.
This also symbolizes the equality among the different states of India. The
people who enact wear the customary dress of the state and some even perform
their traditional dance. Each state will try to outdo others by means of their
performances.
There will also be all types of Indian dance forms performed in
precision by school and college students. Balloons with the color of national
flag will be made float in the air. Air force will show their marvelous
adventure by flying aero planes and jet planes in different formations leaving
behind the mark of national flag in tri-color. They also shower rose petals
from the air. Such beautiful sights cannot be seen every day on the sky.
The Republic Day celebration last for three days and it ends on 29th January. The
last ceremony is the Beating Retreat Ceremony which is performed by the Indian
Defense Force in the evening after officially declaring the end of Republic Day
Celebrations.
Witnessing these celebrations will make every Indian feel proud of their
nation.
Day of Recognition
Before the start of the Republic Day Parade, the Prime Minister of India

Long Essay on Republic Day of India:
History, Celebration, Significance and Awards – Essay 11 (1500 Words)
We all acknowledge 26 January as the Republic Day of India and enjoy a
holiday each year on this day. But do we all actually understand why this day
is so important in the history of our country that it is considered as a
national holiday and celebrated by one and all?
The History Behind Republic Day
After the Indian Independence movement, on 15th August 1947,
India achieved independence from the British Raj. However, a permanent
constitution was yet to be framed for India which was under George VI as head of
the state, while the governor-general was Earl Mountbatten with India being a
constitutional monarchy at the time of independence. At this time, the modified
colonial Government of India Act 1935 was largely considered for the laws under
which India was governed at this time.
In order to draft a permanent constitution, a drafting committee was
appointed on 28 August 1947. Dr B R Ambedkar was appointed as the Chairman of
this drafting committee. On 4 November 1947, the drafting committee, after
having prepared a draft constitution, submitted it to the Constituent Assembly
for review. The meeting of the assembly was held in sessions which were open to
the public and spread over a period of two years, 11 months and 18 days, it met
for 166 days in all.
Finally, on 24 January 1950, the 308 strong members of the Assembly,
after some modifications and amendments, put their signatures of two copies of
the draft document, one each in Hindi and English. This approved draft document
which came into force after two days on 26 January 1950 throughout the entire
country is what we all have till today known as the Constitution of India. This
day is also recognised as the start of the term of the first President of
India, Dr Rajendra Prasad. From that onwards, every year, we celebrate 26
January as our Republic Day.

Preceding the beginning of the Parade, the Prime Minister lays a

the India Gate toward one side of Rajpath, which is trailed by two minutes
silence in the memory of fallen warriors. The sacrifice of the martyrs who laid
down their lives for the country is remembered on this day. From that point,
the Prime Minister arrives at the main dais at Rajpath to join different
dignitaries. Subsequently, the President, along with the chief guests, duly
escorted by the President’s bodyguard on the horseback arrives to join others
at Rajpath. The National Flag is unfurled by the President after which the
National Anthem is played along with a 21-gun salute.

Amid the 1950s– 1970s, various NAM and Eastern Bloc nations were

a few Western pioneers on a state visit on the Republic Day. It is outstanding
that before India battled wars with China and Pakistan, pioneers from these
nations were welcomed as state visitors for the Republic Day festivities. The
Pakistan Food and Agriculture Minister was the second state visitor from that
nation for Republic Day in 1965, a couple of days after which the two nations
went to a war.
Nations which have been welcomed on different occasions incorporate
India’s neighbours (Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius), resistance partners

Nahyan from the United Arab Emirates was the Chief Guest of the motorcade.

Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam and
Thailand.
Republic Day – A Matter of Pride
We should all take pride in celebrating the Republic day as this day

country. There should be special programmes across schools and colleges to
inculcate the laws imbibed in the constitution in the minds of the students.
This shall surely help them to understand their country better and who knows,
one of them may be our leader for tomorrow?
